The course The course was originally laid out by the legendary Old Tom Morris in 1891 over what are now parts of the current course and land now within the boundary of the Milntown Estate. It began its life as a 12 hole course though was soon to be reduced to a nine hole layout. In 1906, a nephew of the original planner, Jack Morris, was engaged to design an enlarged 18 hole course over the existing course land and the recently acquired drained marsh land of Claughbane. By 1907 the new course was open. This course satisfied the Club’s needs until 1929 when the services of James Braid were engaged. 1931 saw the remodelled course opened and this lasted basically untouched, except for an occasional Captain needing to put his touch on the asset, until 1999 when the course needed extensive drainage work on the first six holes. This offered an opportunity to gently alter the design to take account of modern golf. However, the course is still very much a Braid course.
